With the Thunder Duo X, OXS presents an unusual gaming audio system for the desktop. The combination of desktop speakers, integrated subwoofer and wireless neck speaker is designed to provide real surround sound even in places where classic multi-channel speaker systems are almost impossible to implement due to lack of space.
A special feature of the system is the combination of a 5.1.2-channel audio configuration with Dolby Atmos and a wirelessly connected neck speaker. This takes over the rear channels and should therefore enable a more precise spatial reproduction than virtual surround solutions.
Neck speaker complements physical rear channels
While many gaming soundbars rely exclusively on digital signal processing, OXS takes a different approach. The wireless neck speaker adds two physical rear channels to the setup, which are connected via a 5.8 GHz wireless connection.
This should make directional information in games more precisely perceptible. OXS promises advantages over classic stereo or virtual surround systems, particularly in competitive titles where the location of opponents plays an important role.
The neck speaker’s integrated rechargeable battery is said to provide a runtime of up to eight hours. The module can still be used while charging.
130 watts RMS and integrated subwoofer
The Thunder Duo X uses a multi-part driver concept for playback. Two 3.5-inch woofers made of composite material work together with two 20-millimeter silk dome tweeters. The system is complemented by additional 1.5-inch drivers for the treble and rear channels.
An integrated subwoofer is responsible for reproducing low frequencies. OXS specifies the total output as 130 watts RMS or 260 watts peak power.
The sound is tuned using a dual DSP architecture consisting of an Xspace DSP for spatial signal processing and a separate amplifier DSP.
HDMI 2.1 with eARC and 4K/120Hz support
The Thunder Duo X is versatile when it comes to connections. The system supports HDMI 2.1 including eARC and ARC, allowing high-resolution sound formats such as Dolby Atmos to be transmitted with low latency. At the same time, support for current gaming systems with 4K resolution and frame rates of up to 120 hertz is maintained.
USB-C, optical digital inputs and Bluetooth 5.3 are also available. This allows the system to be connected to PCs and games consoles as well as mobile devices or gaming handhelds.
App control and RGB lighting
Various sound profiles for gaming, film, music and individual applications can be selected via the OXS Audio app. In addition, parameters such as bass, treble, gain or individual channels can be adjusted.
The features are complemented by integrated RGB lighting with various effects and freely configurable colors.
Optimized for use in the near field
According to the manufacturer, the futuristically designed housing was specially developed for use on a desk. The speakers are tilted upwards by eight degrees so that the sound is directed towards the listening position. This should ensure more precise reproduction, particularly in the near field.
Price and availability
The OXS Thunder Duo X is available now. The recommended retail price is 649.99 euros. The scope of delivery includes the wireless neck speaker for the rear channels.
With its unusual concept of soundbar, integrated subwoofer and wireless neck speakers, the Thunder Duo X positions itself as an alternative to classic gaming headsets and compact desktop speakers. A test will have to show whether the combination of Dolby Atmos and physical rear channels actually provides a convincing surround experience in practice.
