With the NX-70A, Yamaha introduces a new pair of wireless active speakers designed to combine classic HiFi virtues with modern streaming technology. These compact two-way speakers are aimed at music lovers who want to do without a separate amplifier solution but still have high demands for sound quality and features. Yamaha pays special attention to the speaker technology itself, the automatic calibration, and flexible integration into modern streaming and multi-room environments.
Wireless HiFi instead of a compromise
Active speakers have long since evolved from a niche product into a serious alternative to classic HiFi systems. With the NX-70A, Yamaha wants to show that convenience and sound quality don’t have to be a contradiction. The speakers communicate with each other wirelessly and can also receive music wirelessly. This eliminates most of the usual cabling. At the same time, numerous connection options for classic players are retained.
For streaming, the NX-70A supports Apple AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, and Tidal Connect. Furthermore, the speakers are Roon Ready, allowing them to be integrated into sophisticated streaming environments. Control is handled via Yamaha’s MusicCast app, which also serves as the control center for the company’s own multi-room system.
HDMI eARC makes the speakers a soundbar alternative
In addition to music sources, the Japanese manufacturer also has TV users in mind. The NX-70A features HDMI eARC or ARC including CEC control. This allows the active speakers to be connected directly to the TV and conveniently controlled via its remote. The connectivity options are rounded off by USB, Ethernet, and an analog input via stereo mini-jack.
This positions Yamaha’s speakers not just as a classic music solution, but also as a high-quality alternative to soundbars.
Technologies from instrument making
Yamaha is particularly proud of the Harmonious Diaphragm technology developed for the NX-70A. It uses a material blend of ZYLON and spruce wood for the membranes. The latter is no coincidence, coming from the company’s instrument-making division and also used for the soundboards of Yamaha grand pianos.
The goal of this construction is to achieve the most uniform sound characteristics possible across the entire frequency range. This is intended to reproduce instruments and voices in a particularly natural and authentic way.
Synergistic Drive designed to minimize distortion
Another special feature is the Synergistic Drive concept developed by Yamaha. Here, the amplifier and speaker are developed as a complete system and are very closely intertwined. The direct connection between the amplifier section and the speaker unit is designed to precisely control the current flow and thereby reduce distortion.
This approach recalls the philosophy of many high-end active speakers, where electronics and chassis are not viewed as separate components, but as a perfectly matched unit.
Integrated automatic room calibration
A feature that has been rather rare in this product class until now is the integrated automatic calibration. Yamaha equips the NX-70A with YPAO R.S.C., a technology previously known primarily from the manufacturer’s AV receivers.
Using a measurement microphone, the system analyzes the listening room and automatically adjusts playback to the acoustic conditions. According to Yamaha, even early reflections are taken into account to achieve the most precise sound tuning possible. Especially in living rooms, where speakers can rarely be placed under ideal conditions, this could provide a noticeable advantage.
Cabinet consistently optimized for sound
Yamaha also follows a clear acoustic approach with the cabinet. The rounded shape is designed to minimize standing waves inside, while a particularly rigid construction reduces unwanted vibrations. Additionally, a five-millimeter thick aluminum plate is used on the top to help stabilize the cabinet.
Price and availability
The Yamaha NX-70A is expected to be available from August 2026. The price per pair is 2,949 euros. Yamaha offers matching speaker stands called SPS-70A for 589 euros per pair.
Initial assessment
With the NX-70A, Yamaha pursues an interesting approach between a classic HiFi system, a streaming system, and a soundbar replacement. In particular, the combination of wireless signal transmission, extensive streaming support, integrated room calibration, and specially developed speaker technologies sets these active speakers apart from many competitors.
Whether the NX-70A can deliver on its ambitious sonic promises will only be revealed by an extensive listening test. On paper, however, these compact active speakers certainly bring some ingredients that pique curiosity.
