Audio-Technica to showcase its new AT-MCD1 reference cartridge at High End Vienna

With the new AT-MCD1, Audio-Technica is presenting its most elaborate Moving Coil cartridge to date at High End 2026 in Vienna. The new flagship from the Japanese manufacturer relies on an integrated diamond cantilever with a Shibata stylus, a newly developed generator system, and a resonance-optimized titanium housing. The AT-MCD1 is designed to build on the findings from the limited anniversary cartridge AT-MC2022 and make them available in series production.

Diamond cantilever for maximum precision

The heart of the new system is a one-piece diamond component in which the cantilever and stylus form an integrated unit. This is intended to minimize energy losses and transmit the information stored in the record groove with exceptional precision.

Audio-Technica uses a diamond cantilever that is only 0.22 millimeters thick with a square cross-section. The material is characterized by an extremely high speed of sound and stiffness. According to the manufacturer, this should enable particularly fast transient response, a natural decay of instruments, and exceptionally precise vocal reproduction.

New Shibata stylus for the finest details

For the first time, Audio-Technica is using a newly developed Shibata stylus with an even more refined cut in the AT-MCD1. With a curvature radius of R2.7 × r0.08 mil, it is designed to track even complex groove modulations with exceptional accuracy.

The manufacturer promises an even more detailed reproduction of the finest information, such as breathing sounds in vocal recordings or the decay phases of string instruments. At the same time, high-frequency resonances are to be effectively suppressed in order to create a more natural and non-fatiguing sound image.

Lab hypothesis confirmed: The MC cartridge has a Shibata stylus based on a synthetic diamond.

Lab-grown diamond

No natural diamond is used for the diamond cantilever; instead, a synthetic diamond manufactured using the CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) process is employed.

In this process, carbon atoms are deposited layer by layer from the gas phase. The result is diamonds with particularly uniform material properties and high manufacturing precision. Audio-Technica sees this as ideal conditions for use as a cantilever in a high-end cartridge.

Moving Coil technology with titanium housing

The generator of the AT-MCD1 operates as a Dual Moving Coil system with high channel separation and extended frequency response. A newly developed magnetic circuit with increased flux density is designed to increase the output voltage while simultaneously minimizing distortion.

Highly pure PCOCC coils and thickly gold-plated contact pins are used for signal transmission. The housing consists of a hybrid construction of titanium, aluminum, and special damping materials to effectively control resonances.

After manufacturing, each housing is hand-polished and finished with a black ion coating. Each cartridge also receives an individual serial number.

Handcrafted in Japan

Like the previous anniversary model, the new AT-MCD1 is also handcrafted in Japan. The scope of delivery includes a high-quality cherry wood case. Assembly is intended to be particularly easy thanks to integrated threaded holes on compatible headshells and tonearms.

Price and availability

Audio-Technica is presenting the new AT-MCD1 for the first time at High End 2026 in Vienna. Information on price and market launch is not yet available.
