Yamaha WXA-70A and WXC-70A: New Streaming Hubs with and without Power Amplifiers

In the age of streaming, a decade is an eternity. Back in 2016, Yamaha introduced two compact MusicCast components: the WXA-50 and the WXC-50. Now, the long-established Japanese company is taking things to the next level with the WXA-70A and the WXC-70A. One model comes equipped with power amplifiers for passive speakers, while the other is designed to add the latest streaming and TV features to existing hi-fi systems.

Both new models are housed in an aluminum enclosure just 22 centimeters wide and are based on the same digital platform. This includes MusicCast, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, and Roon Ready certification. Bluetooth with SBC and AAC is also included.

Music and TV audio under one roof

Compared to their predecessors, the Yamaha WXA-70A and WXC-70A represent a major leap forward, especially when it comes to connecting to a TV. Both feature HDMI eARC and ARC, respectively, and can be turned on and off and have their volume adjusted using the remote control of a compatible TV. An adjustable dialogue enhancement feature is designed to make voices in movies, TV shows, or news programs stand out more clearly.

Additional audio sources can be connected via an analog RCA input, an optical digital input, and a USB-A port. The latter is used for both music playback and firmware updates. However, neither of the two Yamaha models features a phono preamp. A turntable therefore requires either a built-in equalizer or a separate phono preamp.

MusicCast allows you to stream not only music from streaming services but also TV audio and connected sources to other rooms. You can control the system using either the MusicCast app, the included remote control, or directly on the device itself. To this end, Yamaha has equipped both models with an OLED display as well as rotary and function buttons on the front panel.

The Yamaha WXA-70A directly drives passive speakers

The WXA-70A is the all-in-one solution for a compact stereo system. According to Yamaha, its built-in power amplifiers deliver 55 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 105 watts per channel at 4 ohms—with both channels driven across the entire frequency range from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. Passive speakers can be connected via gold-plated screw terminals, and a separate output is available for an active subwoofer.

Inside, an ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M handles the digital-to-analog conversion. Yamaha combines it with a circuit layout called “DAC on Pure Ground,” which is designed to shield sensitive analog signals from interference as effectively as possible.

The Yamaha WXC-70A as a streamer and preamplifier

The WXC-70A does not have its own power amplifiers and is therefore designed for owners of an existing integrated amplifier, receiver, or power amplifier. A switch on the back panel allows you to choose between player and preamp modes. In player mode, the Yamaha sends a fixed signal to an integrated amplifier, while in preamp mode, it handles the volume control itself.

Analog RCA outputs as well as optical and coaxial digital outputs are available for connecting to the system. A subwoofer output is also included. The WXC-70A uses the same ESS DAC as its amplified counterpart.

YPAO Makes Its Way into Compact Streaming Hi-Fi Systems

A notable feature of both models is the room correction included as standard. The included measurement microphone captures the acoustic conditions at the listening position. YPAO then adjusts the frequency response, while YPAO R.S.C. is designed to account for early room reflections that can impair sound staging and clarity. YPAO Volume also performs volume-dependent sound correction.

For integration into more sophisticated home automation systems, the WXA-70A and WXC-70A offer, among other features, Control4 compatibility, setup via a web browser, an IR input, and a 12-volt trigger output. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can be disabled independently of each other as needed.

Both units measure 220 x 73 x 267 millimeters and are available in black or silver. The WXA-70A weighs 2.6 kilograms, while the WXC-70A weighs 1.9 kilograms without the power amplifiers.

Prices and availability

On Yamaha’s European websites, the WXA-70A and the WXC-70A are already listed as new products. However, prices and a specific release date for Germany have not yet been announced. In the U.S., both models are scheduled to be released in November 2026. There, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $1,299.95 for the WXA-70A and $999.95 for the WXC-70A.
