The debate about ageing music streamers and smart speakers will remain a hot topic in 2026: more and more often, devices fall out of the picture after just a few years due to app incompatibilities, missing online services or the end of software updates. This frustrates users just as much as it fuels anger about avoidable electronic waste.
Cambridge Audio occupies a special position here. The company announced that a current firmware update will continue to fully support many streamer models built up to 2014. That makes devices based on the platform known as “StreamMagic” (generations 2 and 3) among the oldest network components on the market that are still actively receiving new features.
Multiple streaming generations benefit
The free update is available for various models—such as StreamMagic 6 V2, CXN, CXR, Azur 851N, CXN V2 and Edge NQ. And not to forget the Cambridge Audio Evo One all-in-one speaker, which we rated highly (read the review here). Even early products in the StreamMagic series that have been on the market for twelve years benefit from the new software. Features such as Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect including lossless streaming (24-bit), and Amazon Music are now also available for older systems.
Focus: longevity and feature maintenance
Cambridge Audio notes that the update can be installed “over the air”. With an existing internet connection, the update is detected automatically, but must be confirmed by the user. The updates are free and are intended to noticeably extend the devices’ life cycle.
With sustainability in mind, Cambridge Audio makes it clear that it doesn’t send older tech into early retirement. Alongside recyclable packaging and service-friendly headphone concepts, the manufacturer is once again underlining its commitment to long-term product support with its current firmware push.
Industry under pressure
While many streaming components and smart speakers in the hi-fi industry otherwise steadily lose features or become incompatible with new apps, Cambridge Audio is bucking the trend with its own software platform. For users, it’s a signal that maintaining features over many years is entirely possible—provided development and platform control are taken seriously.
Quick facts:
- Firmware update for all StreamMagic devices from 2014 onwards (Gen 2/3)
- New features: Qobuz Connect, Spotify Lossless, Amazon Music
- Free update, OTA installation (over the air)
- Goal: longer service life, sustainability in network hi-fi
