The product characteristics of the new Magnat Monitor Active 2000 are similar to the well-known Multi Monitor 220 Active model. The dimensions are also similar. A full-featured stereo speaker set with built-in amplifier, rudimentary preamp functions, Bluetooth playback and remote control. In contrast to the more expensive sister model, however, the manufacturer points to more diverse application possibilities and mentions desktop sound reinforcement as well as recording studio.

The price, on the other hand, is a challenge: no renowned manufacturer offers such a set for 350 Euros, but at best a well-made Bluetooth-Onebox. So for beginners, this is an exciting way to get full stereo imaging.

The appearance is based on classic stereo boxes: rectangular box design with a price class-related well-made matt lacquer and wood decor surface, which is only available in black. The two-way configuration, i.e. tweeter and bass-midrange driver, is typical for small hi-fi speakers. At 12.5 cm, the mid-bass driver is just big enough to reproduce bass without painful limitations. The fabric dome tweeter is even reminiscent of much more expensive speakers. The integrated amplifiers provide 35 watts per channel and are located in the right speaker. The left one is connected with a cable. It is not possible to swap the two channels. This should be taken into account especially by those users who supply their Magnat Monitor Active 2000 with a fibre optic cable from the TV.

Functions and features

The applications are good thanks to four inputs, but not outstandingly diverse: In addition to Bluetooth (version 4.1), it offers an optical input and one analog RCA and one mini-jack input each. The Cinch pair can be redesignated as a phono input for the record player, if it is equipped with an MM cartridge. The source selection as well as a sound control and simple control of the Bluetooth source is mastered by the Infrorat remote control. On the back of the right speaker, however, there is also a rotary control for level and source selection. For easy adjustment to room acoustics and placement, bass and treble can be finely adjusted via remote control.

Ease-of-use and connectivity

Bluetooth connection worked without problems, but the pairing button is untypically located on the remote control. Also the other operation is sclhicht and intuitive. The selected source is displayed by a color LED, the colors are familiar after a short habituation, as well as flickering in response to volume commands. The phono input worked without problems during the review, thanks to the additional ground socket also hum-free.

This is how the Magnat Monitor Active 2000 sounds

Should the Magnat be considered a cheap toy or a full-fledged hi-fi? The listening test made it clear: the latter is the case. A very natural wide space with beautiful vocal imaging built up. In particular, their fine detail in complex recordings and their truly audiophile voice reproduction could satisfy even the most demanding listeners.

Although not overly deep in the bass, the Magnat speakers commanded a crisp foundation and sounded balanced throughout. And quite independent of the display location, both free-standing on the stand and on the shelf. On the lowboard or in the corner it cut a good figure, which is rare for loudspeakers. If the bass becomes too thin or too fat, it can be easily and effectively counteracted with the bass control.

The deep, wide spatial imaging was maintained even in typical near-field situations. For example, on the desk or at the mixing console, which made the Magnat particularly suitable as a nearfield monitor. Larger listening distances clearly above 2 meters were not ideal depending on the room acoustics. The sound was then a bit too distant and clearly lost directness and dynamics. Anyone who has heard this spatiality, fine resolution, will never again reach for a one-box system, even if the best can match the Magnat in other disciplines such as bass and neutrality.

Magnat Monitor Active 2000: Verdict and alternatives

In the price segment of 350 euros, the Magnat Stereo Set has no serious competitors. The 100 Euro more expensive Triangle Senza-03 has similar functionality including phono input and plays a bit more dynamic. However, the Magnat is clearly beaten in terms of naturalness, fine detail and spatial imaging. This is especially true for typical desktop applications. In this respect, buy tip without competitor recommendation. If no excessive levels or ultimate dynamics/playing pleasure are required, this is where the Magnat Monitor Active 2000 reaches its technical limits.
