STEREO GUIDE verdict
The AirPods Max 2 remains externally unchanged but audibly improves in sound. The new H2 chip brings more control, dynamics, and further improved noise cancelling. It unfolds its full potential within the Apple ecosystem – ideally via USB-C. For owners of the first model, it's a clear upgrade; for USB-C users, a subtle but understandable step forward.

Do I really need them? For fans, there’s no question: the AirPods Max is the best sound transducer in the Apple world. And it remains so. But there’s now the new version, the Max 2? That’s right. But the newcomer impressively shows how much can change at Apple without it being visible.
At first glance, little has changed. Design, materials, feel – all familiar. The Apple over-ear remains externally consistent, but audibly improves in sound. The key to this lies deep inside: a new chip.
These crucial questions concern Apple fans: Is it worth getting into? Clearly, yes. Is the upgrade from the first model worthwhile? We say an equally clear yes. And how big is the difference to the USB-C version introduced a year ago and tested by STEREO GUIDE? We have to be vague here: it depends, but reading on is particularly worthwhile in this case.
Lifestyle? Yes – but also true high-end
Apple deliberately refrains from visible changes. No one in your circle of friends will recognize whether you have the old or the new model on your ears. Although: The original version still had a Lightning connector (2020), the successor already relied on USB-C (2024). Also, because the European Union demanded it – fighting cable clutter.
But: The port is on the bottom, hardly anyone sees it. Everything as before – externally: the aluminum casing, the magnetically held ear cushions, the distinctive crown. This design restraint has a nice side effect: older models do not lose value or relevance or self-esteem in the streetscape. Apple remains true to its line and avoids fashionable breaks. This may seem less spectacular, but at its beautiful core, it is sustainable.

New Chip, New Control
Instead, the Cupertino giant relies on a quiet but effective upgrade: the H2 chip replaces the previous H1. This sounds like routine, but it is central to performance.
With modern headphones, it’s no longer the mechanics, the drivers, the membranes that decide, but above all the signal processing. And this is precisely where the Max 2 noticeably improves. Don’t forget: there’s also a new drive unit – Apple calls it the High Dynamic Range amplifier.
Apple Ecosystem as Key
At around 580 euros, the AirPods Max 2 clearly positions itself in the premium segment – and thus in direct proximity to the major luxury brands. Apple consistently relies on digital control and system integration. This pays off – especially when the headphones are operated within the Apple ecosystem.
Sub-message to all Android users: This makes no sense for you, sonically, when considering the depths of the technical and practical architecture.
Via USB-C, the Max 2 can be driven losslessly with up to 24 bits and 48 kHz. This allows Apple to bypass the limitations of Bluetooth. The gain is not just a numbers game, but immediately audible: more detail, more stable spatial imaging, and above all, significantly more dynamics.
Suitable for Everyday Use Despite Weight
In daily use, the AirPods Max remains a character for the discerning individual. The massive construction conveys quality, the weight is present but well distributed. Wearing comfort remains pleasant even over longer periods. But there are lighter competitors.
For operation, Apple continues to rely on the rotating crown – while competitors mostly use touch surfaces on the earcups. This initially seems conservative but proves to be precise and reliable in everyday use.
This is complemented by built-in sensors that automatically pause the headphones or detect movements. This also indicates where the journey is headed in the future. Features like personalized sound, head tracking, and adaptive adjustment are more than just gimmicks – they are building blocks for future, more AI-supported interaction.
The moments when I can answer a call by nodding my head are great – the headphones as a best friend for the modern lifestyle.

Sound: More Control, More Dynamics
In the listening test, the progress quickly became apparent. It is not dramatic in quantity. But who measures in quantity at Apple? It’s the gains in quality.
In our test, the AirPods Max 2 played more confidently, with more control, and more openly than its predecessor. The soundstage appeared richer – not only in width but also in pace. It is precisely this increased dynamic readiness that is immediately noticeable: impulses come with more emphasis. In both rough punch and fine pulsation.
Acoustic recordings particularly benefit. A live jazz club recording had more body, the bass was significantly drier, all without showmanship. The comparison to the Max 1 is immense, to the USB-C interim version it’s more subtle, but no less desirable.
Even with dense productions, the Max 2 maintains clarity. Complex arrangements – big bands, heavy rock – are more cleanly layered and more dynamically tangible. Overall, the Max 2 appears more analytical than flattering.
These were already true audiophile values at the market launch in 2020 – and are even more so now. But always remember: the recording determines the enjoyment. The new Max 2 doesn’t embellish, doesn’t fatten – but it’s a splendor when the mixing truly plays along well and dynamically.
Again: It remains the best sound mediator in the Apple world.
Noise Cancelling at Reference Level
The active noise cancelling is the reference, far beyond the Apple family ties. Thanks to more H2 computing power, it is also significantly more effective.
Of course, trains and airplanes can acoustically disappear. Now, the people to my left on the S-Bahn have also disappeared, no babble of voices, you are alone – magnificent. Especially because the sound image remains natural and no psychoacoustic irritations creep in.
Plus the improved latency: it’s faster. Gamers will love it. As will music producers in their home studios – open the MacBook, start Logic Pro, and the new Max 2 are a real, honest sound tool via USB-C.
Conclusion: Apple AirPods Max 2 (2026)
A typical Apple upgrade: externally understated, even identical, but technically a leap. The new chip boosts sonic performance. Clearly perceptible, there is more information about the recording space, about fine and coarse dynamics.
In addition, two more points that are more than just additions: the more effective noise cancelling and its use as a true monitor headphone for sound creators.
However: The newcomer only unfolds its full potential within the Apple cosmos – ideally with current software and a wired connection (tip!). This then places it in the realm of classic high-end headphones.
For the purchase decision: The upgrade from the first model is maximally worthwhile. Owners of the USB-C version won’t experience a ‘wow’ effect, but the audible plus will be clearly recognized after two or three songs.
