With the new AirPods Max 2, Apple is expanding its premium headphone lineup with a revised version of the well-known over-ear model (here’s our review of the previous models). The second generation relies on the powerful Apple H2 chip and, in addition to improved active noise cancellation, brings new smart features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Live Translation.
The new headphones can be pre-ordered from March 25 and are expected to ship in early April. The MSRP is €579.
Improved noise cancellation
Thanks to the H2 chip and new algorithms for so-called “computational audio,” the AirPods Max 2’s active noise cancellation is said to work significantly more effectively than the previous model. According to Apple, the system reduces disruptive ambient noise—such as aircraft engines or train noise—by up to 1.5x more.
Transparency mode has also been revised. A new DSP algorithm ensures outside sounds are reproduced more naturally, while conversations with people nearby remain possible.
Improved sound quality and lossless audio
Alongside the optimized ANC, Apple also promises improvements in sound quality. A new high dynamic range amplifier is designed to deliver more precise playback. In addition, the model supports lossless audio at 24-bit/48 kHz when the headphones are connected via the USB-C cable.
Combined with Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking, music, movies, and games are said to feel especially immersive. For creatives such as podcasters, musicians, or content creators, Apple says the low latency even enables use during music production, for example in Logic Pro.
New smart features
The H2 chip brings several new features to the over-ear headphones:
- Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts the balance between noise cancellation and Transparency mode to match your surroundings.
- Conversation Awareness lowers playback volume when users speak with people nearby.
- Voice Isolation improves voice quality on calls.
- Live Translation enables conversations across language barriers with the help of Apple Intelligence.
- Camera Remote lets you trigger photos or videos via the Digital Crown.
In addition, audio recordings made with the built-in microphones are said to achieve higher quality, which could be interesting for interviews or podcasts.
Sustainability
As part of its environmental program Apple 2030, Apple is increasingly using recycled materials in the AirPods Max 2. For example, all magnets are made from 100% recycled rare earth metals, while the ear cushions use fully recycled polyester. According to Apple, the packaging and circuit boards also contain numerous recycled materials.
