With the new L/R series, Cambridge Audio presents its first active speakers at the Consumer Electronics Show 2026 – and immediately sets new standards in several respects. Three models, L/R S, L/R M and L/R X, are designed to enable convenient streaming, high connectivity and fully-fledged hi-fi sound without a classic equipment tower.
The developers promise an unusually mature sound image with powerful bass from compact, clearly designed housings. While the two larger models are intended to replace complete hi-fi systems, the L/R S is aimed at users who are looking for uncomplicated premium sound in a small space.
L/R M and L/R X: Active speakers as a fully-fledged hi-fi center
The L/R M and L/R X models are designed as uncompromising all-in-one solutions. The latest StreamMagic platform (Generation 4), known from the Evo receivers and the STEREO GUIDE streaming complete system Evo One from Cambridge Audio last year, works in every pair of speakers. This means that numerous streaming options are directly available, including Tidal Connect, Spotify Connect, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Roon Ready, Internet radio and multi-room operation via Google Cast or Apple AirPlay 2.
Wired sources are also comprehensively taken into account:
HDMI eARC integrates the television and allows the volume to be controlled via the TV remote control. An integrated MM phono stage directly records turntables, in addition to line and digital inputs. The connection between the two speakers in a stereo set can be made either via USB-C or wirelessly using the WiSA-HT standard.
Control and setup are carried out using a free app for iOS and Android. In addition to source selection and volume, sound parameters can be specifically adapted to the room and setup using a 7-band equalizer and room correction.

Sound concept: Compact, but with the ambition of a floorstanding speaker
Acoustically, L/R M and L/R X rely on a complex 2.5-way concept with two mid-bass drivers each, supplemented by laterally arranged passive radiators. These are larger than the active bass drivers and are intended to ensure clean bass and high sound pressure levels. The crossover works completely digitally, with six power amplifiers used per stereo pair.
The power output is correspondingly generous: the L/R M has a total of 2 × 150 watts RMS available, while the L/R X has a total of 2 × 400 watts.
For the high frequency range, the engineers developed new Torus tweeters, whose ring-shaped sound guidance and specially adapted waveguides are intended to enable even dispersion and precise spatial imaging. In particular, the top model L/R X is therefore also designed for larger rooms.

L/R S: Compact entry-level with a focus on simplicity
With the L/R S, Cambridge Audio brings the basic idea of the series into a smaller, more attractively priced form. The closed housing promises controlled bass even when placed close to the wall on a shelf or desk. Four chassis are driven by a Class D amplifier with a total of 100 W RMS.
Wireless playback is via Bluetooth with aptX HD, plus an analog input, USB and optical Toslink. An external subwoofer can be connected for more bass or higher levels. Simple app control via Bluetooth allows sound corrections and EQ presets, taking into account the setup.
Colors, prices and market launch
All models are available in five paint colors – White, Black, Midnight Blue, Racing Green and Orange – as well as optionally with real wood veneer in walnut.
