Kiso cypress, hand-applied lacquer, and a price of 3,799 euros: With the ATH-AWX7000, Audio-Technica combines Japanese craftsmanship with newly developed driver technology. These closed-back over-ear headphones take the top spot in their category within the product line, complementing the open-back flagship model, the ATH-ADX7000. These new premium headphones are developed and manufactured at Audio-Technica’s Naruse plant in Japan.
Closed-back design, new driver technology
The ATH-AWX7000 is the first model to feature Audio-Technica’s “True Closed-back Acoustic” concept, or TCbA for short. With this concept, the manufacturer aims to make targeted use of the air pressure inside the closed ear cups. The goal: to combine the powerful bass response and wide dynamic range of closed-back headphones with a transparent reproduction of mids and highs.
Inside, dynamic 58-mm drivers feature a newly developed hybrid diaphragm. The acronym HMD, which stands for Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm, refers to a combination of a polymer film and a metal dome. An enlarged bonding surface between the materials is designed to ensure that the diaphragm retains its shape even under high air pressure and moves as a single unit as much as possible. Audio-Technica expects this to result in better transient response and greater dynamics.
Added to this is the HXDT technology—short for High-Concentricity X Dynamic Transducer—already featured in the ATH-ADX7000. This manufacturing process ensures the precise alignment of the baffle, magnet, voice coil, and diaphragm. According to the manufacturer, manufacturing tolerances are reduced to one-tenth of the conventional level. A magnetic circuit made of non-oriented electrical steel is also designed to reduce energy losses.
Kiso cypress with traditional lacquer finish
The enclosures are made of Kiso cypress, a slow-growing wood from Japan. According to Audio-Technica, the company sources it through a special allocation from strictly managed state-owned forests. The unique grain pattern makes even the untreated material unmistakable.
For the finish, the manufacturer uses Echizen lacquer. According to Audio-Technica, this Japanese craft tradition dates back more than 1,500 years. The lacquer is applied by hand with a brush and is designed to highlight the wood’s natural color and grain. Slight variations in craftsmanship give each piece its own unique character.

Magnesium, leather, and two cables
Audio-Technica pairs the wooden housing with a lightweight magnesium frame and headband, as well as precision-machined aluminum sliders for size adjustment. The metal parts feature a deep navy blue, inspired by the Japanese color “Kachi-iro,” which is traditionally considered the samurai’s lucky color. Soft leather ear pads are designed to fit comfortably and provide a reliable seal around the ears. The headband has also been redesigned.
According to the manufacturer, the ATH-AWX7000 weighs approximately 353 grams without cables. Its impedance is 48 ohms, and its sensitivity is 97 dB/mW.
The package includes two detachable cables: a 2.5-meter balanced cable with a 4-pin Neutrik XLR plug and a 3-meter unbalanced cable with a 6.3-mm stereo jack. The headphones feature the company’s proprietary A2DC connectors. A sturdy carrying case is also included in the package.
