Sony will release the WH-1000XM6 in the new Olive Gray color variant starting in August 2026. Technically, it remains the familiar flagship noise-canceling model, which impressed in the STEREO-GUIDE test with very good ANC, powerful sound, and long battery life.
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is one of the top noise-canceling headphones of the year. In our in-depth Sony WH-1000XM6 review, these over-ear headphones earned a Stereo Guide rating of 93 percent and received our “Highlight” designation. Particularly impressive were the balanced sound with rich, clean bass, the good spatial imaging, the long battery life, and the excellent noise cancellation.
Sony is now expanding the model series with a new color option: Olive Gray. This subtle earth tone complements the previously introduced Sand Pink and Sandstone versions and continues Sony’s line of high-quality, nature-inspired colors. This doesn’t reinvent the WH-1000XM6—but it does give it another look that’s both cozy and fashionably understated.
Understated luxury instead of a high-tech look
With Olive Gray, Sony is clearly targeting users who look for not only technology but also everyday practicality and style in premium headphones. The new color looks less technical than classic black, but also less eye-catching than brighter fashion colors. Sony describes the shade as timeless and minimalist—a fitting description for a product designed for longevity, both visually and functionally.
That’s not entirely unimportant for headphones like the WH-1000XM6. Models like these aren’t just worn on the couch, but also on the train, on a plane, in the office, on the way to work, or while focusing on work in a café. It’s precisely in those settings that a subtle color option can make all the difference: high-quality, but not flashy.

Proven Technology of the WH-1000XM6
From a technical standpoint, the WH-1000XM6 in Olive Gray sticks to the familiar design concept. These over-ear headphones continue to feature Sony’s latest noise-canceling technology, Bluetooth playback, a high level of comfort, and the same features as the existing model. In our test, the WH-1000XM6 proved to be a logical evolution of its predecessor: evolutionary in design, but with noticeable improvements in usability, portability, noise cancellation, and sound quality.
One particularly welcome feature: Sony has brought back the foldable design for the XM6. This makes the headphones more compact for travel. At the same time, usability has been improved with buttons that are easier to feel. In addition to the power button, there’s a separate button for noise canceling, ambient sound, and microphone mute. The touch controls on the right ear cup remain.
Powerful ANC for Travel and Everyday Use
Of course, active noise cancellation remains a core feature of the 1000X series. For the WH-1000XM6, Sony has incorporated a new HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 and a sophisticated microphone array. In the Stereo-Guide test, the adaptive ANC performed particularly well in the low-frequency range—precisely where train, airplane, and traffic noise become especially tiring over time.
The Transparency Mode also impressed in our hands-on test because it comfortably lets ambient sounds and conversations through without producing significant noise. This makes the WH-1000XM6 not only a great travel companion but also a pair of headphones for switching between isolation and the outside world on a daily basis.
Balanced sound rather than an effects machine
In terms of sound, the WH-1000XM6 didn’t come across as a spectacular diva in our test, but rather as a very well-rounded all-rounder. It delivers a balanced, detailed sound with clean, rich bass. It’s precisely this combination that aligns with the vision behind the new color variant: The Sony is designed not only to impress technically but also to function as seamlessly as possible in everyday life.
It also features modern convenience features such as LDAC for high-resolution audio via Bluetooth, DSEE Extreme for AI-powered upscaling, as well as sound profiles and a 10-band equalizer in the Sony Sound Connect app. For movie fans and gamers, the headphones also offer 360 Upmix for Cinema and a gaming EQ preset.
Price and availability
The Sony WH-1000XM6 in Olive Gray will be available starting in August 2026. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is 449 euros. This means the new color variant costs the same as the standard WH-1000XM6 did at launch.

Assessment
With this new color option, Sony has captured the German zeitgeist with astonishing precision. In any case, Olive Gray in a satin finish fits perfectly into a season in which even some automakers are suddenly considering military-style colors and matching vehicles once again.
