With the Play and Era 100 SL, Sonos is expanding its speaker portfolio with two new models designed to further strengthen the manufacturer’s multiroom system. Both speakers are aimed at newcomers as well as existing users who want to expand their system easily.
According to Sonos, the focus is primarily on flexibility and system integration. New devices should integrate seamlessly into existing setups and enhance the listening experience with each additional speaker, rather than replacing older components.

Sonos Play: Flexible Speaker for Home and On the Go
The new Sonos Play is designed as a versatile speaker that can be used both in the home network and on the move. On Wi-Fi, it can be integrated into the Sonos multiroom system as usual, grouped with other speakers, or operated as a stereo pair.
In addition, the speaker also supports mobile use. An integrated battery provides up to 24 hours of runtime according to the manufacturer. The housing is IP67-rated for protection against dust and water. A removable carrying strap makes transport easier.
Also new is a function for direct Bluetooth grouping. This allows multiple compatible Sonos speakers to be synchronized with each other even outside the home network. Additionally, automatic Trueplay tuning adapts the sound to the respective environment.
Additional features include control via voice services, Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and the Sonos app. An integrated power bank also enables charging a smartphone on the go.
Era 100 SL: Microphone-Free Version of the Era 100

The Era 100 SL, on the other hand, is aimed at users looking for the most straightforward entry into the Sonos system. The speaker is based on the familiar Era 100 concept (here’s our review), but omits integrated microphones.
This makes the model particularly suitable for users who deliberately want to do without voice control or prefer a speaker without microphones. In terms of sound, the Era 100 SL should still deliver full, room-filling audio.
Like other Sonos speakers, the model can be used flexibly in the multiroom system—for example, as an additional room speaker, as a stereo pair, or as part of a home theater setup.
Focus on System Rather Than Individual Device
With the two new speakers, Sonos once again emphasizes the system concept of its multiroom ecosystem. According to the manufacturer, products should remain compatible across generations and continue to evolve through continuous platform updates.
The speakers were also developed with support from the so-called Sonos Soundboard—a group of creatives from music, film, and other fields who contribute to sound tuning.

In parallel, Sonos is working on improvements to its app. After the 2024 relaunch drew criticism, CEO Tom Conrad announced further optimizations to the Sonos app and multiroom control, as The Verge just reported.
