With the new Tune models 780NC, 680NC, 730BT and 530BT, JBL promises a fresh look, long battery life and a choice of noise-canceling or pure bass focus. But what’s really behind it? The Tune series has been a bestseller in JBL’s portfolio for years – mainly because it is priced in the lower to mid-range segment and thus reaches a wide audience. Now the manufacturer has revised its entry-level models and equipped them with some features that were previously only found in more expensive headphones.
Four models for different requirements
- JBL Tune 780NC (€129.99): Over-ear with 40 mm drivers, adaptive noise canceling and spatial sound.
- JBL Tune 680NC (€99.99): On-ear version, also with ANC and Spatial Sound, but more compact 32 mm drivers.
- JBL Tune 730BT (€79.99): Over-ear without ANC, but with JBL Pure Bass.
- JBL Tune 530BT (€59.99): On-ear, affordable entry-level with 33 mm drivers and also JBL Pure Bass.
All four rely on Bluetooth 6.0 with LE Audio and Multipoint, support Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair and come with two beamforming microphones for calls.
Long runtime, fast charging
JBL advertises a battery life of up to 76 hours – this is reduced to around 50 hours for the ANC models. A quick-charging function is supposed to provide a further five hours of listening time within five minutes. Whether these figures will be achieved in practice remains to be seen – experience has shown that actual runtimes depend heavily on volume and usage scenarios.
Customizable sound
The two ANC models (780NC and 680NC) also offer Personi-Fi 3.0, a personalizable sound tuning via the app. Users can also fine-tune the sound via EQ and sound modes. This feature is not available for the cheaper 730BT and 530BT.
Design update with familiar colors
Visually, JBL sticks to the familiar Tune style, but uses new metallic hinges and embossed logos. The color palette ranges from classic black and white to blue and beige to an additional lavender variant for the 530BT.
The Tune series is clearly aimed at price-performance: a lot of features for comparatively little money. Noise canceling, spatial sound and multipoint are not a matter of course in this price range.
