JBL Cinema SB MK2: New soundbars use the Flip 7 as a rear speaker

JBL is updating its Cinema SB series with four soundbars, ranging from a compact all-in-one model to a 3.1.2 system with a wireless subwoofer. The most unusual feature of the new JBL Cinema SB MK2 is called SurroundPlay: Two JBL Flip 7 speakers can be integrated as wireless rear speakers. Prices start at 199.99 euros, and the products will go on sale on October 1, 2026.

With this new series, JBL aims not only to cater to different budgets but also to remove a common hurdle for those new to surround sound. After all, separate rear speakers and their wiring are among the things that can quickly spark debate in the living room. Instead, SurroundPlay wirelessly integrates a pair of compatible Bluetooth speakers from the JBL lineup as rear channels.

SurroundPlay turns two Flip 7 Rear speakers

At launch, SurroundPlay works exclusively with the JBL Flip 7, which we tested last year. If you have two of them, you can place them behind your listening position as needed, turning the soundbar setup into a true surround sound system. Afterward, you can take the compact speakers back out to the balcony, to the park, or on trips.

In this context, JBL refers to “compatible JBL speakers,” but initially mentions only the Flip 7. The announcement does not yet indicate whether or when additional models will be supported. All four new soundbars support Bluetooth and Auracast, even independently of SurroundPlay.

A Center Channel for Every Price Range

All models in the JBL Cinema SB MK2 series feature a dedicated center channel. This should particularly enhance speech intelligibility in movies and TV shows. In terms of power, bass performance, and surround sound formats, however, the four variants differ significantly.

The top-of-the-line JBL SB595MK2 operates as a 3.1.2 system with a total power output of 440 watts. Two upward-firing drivers provide the high-frequency soundstage for True Dolby Atmos. A wireless 6.5-inch subwoofer handles the low frequencies. In addition to HDMI eARC, the soundbar offers an additional HDMI input.

The JBL SB580MK2 also delivers 440 watts and comes with the same 6.5-inch wireless subwoofer. It supports Dolby Atmos, but its 3.1 configuration lacks dedicated height channels. An HDMI input and HDMI eARC are also included here.

One tier below, the JBL SB550MK2 combines three front channels with a wireless 5.25-inch subwoofer. It delivers 360 watts, supports Dolby Audio, and connects to the TV via HDMI ARC. The entry-level model, the JBL SB510MK2, does not include a separate bass module. Its subwoofer is built directly into the enclosure of the 200-watt 3.1 soundbar.

JBL Folds Up the Packaging

JBL is also taking an unconventional approach to shipping. The three models—SB595MK2, SB580MK2, and SB550MK2—can be folded into a U-shape for packaging. According to the manufacturer, this is designed to reduce the box volume by up to 20 percent. This saves space during storage and shipping and is also intended to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation. The more compact SB510MK2 does not feature this folding mechanism.

Pricing and Availability

The four soundbars in the JBL Cinema SB MK2 series are scheduled to launch in Germany and Switzerland on October 1, 2026. Prices for the series range from 199.99 euros for the SB510MK2 to 449.99 euros for the SB595MK2.

The most exciting new feature here isn’t the highest wattage, but the integration of two product lines: With SurroundPlay, existing Flip 7 speakers can temporarily take on the role of traditional rear speakers. A test will have to show just how seamlessly the pairing works and how cohesive the sound is when combined with the soundbars.
