With the new ICE 525 Phono, Backes & Müller expands its digital preamplifier series with a version featuring an integrated phono stage. The concept combines classic vinyl playback with digital signal processing, aiming to enable particularly precise equalization and high dynamics.
The ICE 525 functions as a central control unit for the manufacturer’s digital active loudspeakers – such as the Jubilé IO tested by STEREO GUIDE. It connects analog and digital sources to the loudspeakers and transmits music data via the in-house EasyLink system. Audio data is transmitted at full resolution, while volume control only takes place directly in the loudspeakers. According to the manufacturer, this reduces dynamic losses and jitter.
Digital Phono Equalization
The special feature of the ICE 525 Phono is an integrated phono input stage with analog-to-digital conversion. The signal from MM or MC cartridges is first digitized and then fully processed in the digital domain. RIAA equalization is also performed digitally.
According to Backes & Müller, this process allows for a more precise implementation of cutting characteristics than classic analog equalization circuits. This is based on digital filters that are derived from the original cutting curves of historical cutting machines. This is intended to achieve particularly high tonal linearity and precisely controlled phase and timing behavior.
High-Quality A/D Conversion
An A/D converter with an effective signal-to-noise ratio of up to 123 dB is used for digitizing the phono signal. This is intended to allow even very quiet MC cartridges to be processed without loss of detail.
The input impedance can be adjusted for typical MM and MC systems. Various configurations for different cartridges can be stored on a memory card and adjusted via a computer.
Digital Control Center
In addition to the phono section, the ICE 525 offers several analog and digital inputs, including RCA, XLR, Toslink, S/PDIF, AES/EBU, and USB for computers or music servers. This allows the preamplifier to be used as a central control for a wide variety of sources.
Price and availability
The ICE 525 Phono is available now and is offered in brushed black or silver. The recommended retail price is 8,899 Euros.
